Made us Cry...

The Treasure of Maria Mamoun, by Michelle Chalfoun

· MG Books

Picked this jewel up in the library, and we were not disappointed. My 15-year-old daughter loved it!

Maria goes from being a concrete-bound NYC kid to a free-range chicken (oops! child) on Martha's Vineyard, where her mom, a Lebanese immigrant working as a live-in nurse to an eccentric, grumpy old man in a mansion, assumes nothing can hurt Maria, even when left alone for days on end.

She's wrong. Maria quickly finds a treasure map in the loft attic of their guest house, and the story of a pirate who may have used the island to hide his treasure blossoms in her imagination. Maria's off and running to find it, hoping it will solve her mother's money problems.

But of course, one pirate's treasure is not necessarily what a 12-year-old girl thinks it'll be...

I won't spoil how it ends, read and enjoy!
