At theTFOB, my 15-year-old and several other teens interviewed author and one of SCBWI-Los Angeles Conference 2018 headliners, Daniel Jose Older. She was particularly interested to learn he isn't Puerto Rican, like his Shadowshaper heroine, and that he felt he could write her convincingly only after "listening" to lots of others.
