Tips for Writing

· Writing

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love how Jeanette Winterson's writing tips emphasize not just the words on the page, but the act of writing itself.

I love #s 1,2, 4, 5, 9 and most especially, 10!

To #5 I would add, don't take it out of the drawer unless you're willing to work on it -- really work on it, not just give it a cursory dusting. You have to be willing to look at everything, rewrite everything, every time it doesn't work, until it does.

And when you let it go, let it sit in that drawer again because you feel like you don't have anything else to offer -- and it still doesn't work -- and know that's OK, too. You've learned a lot about writing in the rewriting, which you can now apply to your new writing.
