September 15-October 15 is officially Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month, and I'm excited to bring you all the books I read for review this month. I especially love the fabrics I got to use when photographing some of these books (can you spot the ofrenda placemat from my FB page, wink, wink?)! I've sewn quilts and bags and all sorts of things with them.
But I'm going to bend the rules this month and feature these books all month, because...October = Horror. My. Favorite. Genre. Ever. And that month of reviews filled up super fast, like in January of this year. It's ridiculous and exciting how many excellent middle grade horror books are out there right now!
So here it goes for September...
Merci Suárez Changes Gears is a subtle story about a girl and her grandfather who suffers from Alzheimer's. Anyone who knows me knows this was a particularly hard read, but I read through my tears and recommend it whole-heartedly. Manañaland is ultimately a relatively gentle story of a mother's sacrifice, giving up a child so he can have a better life in a better land -- without her. Lupe Wong is about the ultimate middle school indignity, square dancing. Santiago's Road Home is a fictionalized and less intense middle grade Devil's Highway. I was long overdue to start reading the Sal & Gabi Break the Universe series. Book 1 was just fun.
I reviewed the first Love Sugar Magic book this time last year, and really enjoyed the sequel this year. Shadow Crosser is the final book (book 3) in JC Cervantes' Storm Runner trilogy in the Rick Riordan demi-god pantheon. Cece Rios was super-fun to read! Really enjoyed that one!
And finally Skeleton Tree will bridge the months, September to October, as it's spine-tingly (ha!) but not strictly horrific (not a horror book, I mean), and I don't believe it's by a Latinx author (although I may be wrong about that).
