I wanted to try out this FREE, critique partner match up program before reviewing or recommending it.
First of all, let me start off by saying my experience may not be typical, but I found the folks who run this to be super easy to work with and exceptionally professional when the first cohort I signed up for didn't work out as planned.
Let me explain. I saw this announced on a FB group. I signed up for the first "cohort," not knowing what to expect. I was almost finished with my current MS, Dragon Scales, over the summer and needed readers for the whole MS.
The first group of writers I was placed with was kind of a dud, for that specific purpose. The writers in the group offered to exchange pages, but never actually did. l didn't figure out why; I didn't have time to, as I was prepping for Pitch Wars and the clock was ticking.
So I shot a message via the Slack group to an organizer. She recommended applying to a second "cohort," and ask that I outline specifically what I was looking for in critique partners.
My second "cohort" is FANTASTIC! I'm beta reading a full MS that's absolutely stellar, right now, and the others in the group (there's 6 of us total) are dedicated to writing and providing meaningful, actionable feedback on QLs, synopsis, and MSs. We helped each other prepare for Pitch Wars applications and are on to reading MSs, 10 pages at a time. We set up the times and how we meet (via Zoom) based on members' schedules and needs.
So I feel like I can comfortably promote The Write Cohort, with the caveat that there's a bit of "you get out of it what you put into it" as well. IF you're serious about writing, giving and getting feedback on your manuscripts, then this is a great option. Don't be discouraged if the first cohort you sign up for isn't quite what you're looking for. Speak up, ask for a change. I think they offer something for everyone, whether self or trad pubbing, as long as you're clear with your expectations in your sign up form.
