The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, by Stacy McAnulty

Being struck by a bolt of lightning made 12-year-old Lucy Callahan a math whiz, but surviving the jolt came with downsides, too.

Imagine finishing high school and stressing about college applications in...6th grade. Her grandmother is determined that Lucy needs to develop some decent socialization skills before heading to college, so she challenges Lucy to finish 7th grade at the local middle school, first.

But as we all know, middle school is he%$, right? There's no pretending this is going to be anything other than hard on Lucy, even if she does make a friend, Windy, through the rite-of-passage of forgiving said friend for betraying her. (I won't say how, or when it happens -- but it does. Sigh.)

And then Lucy falls in love with a doomed dog at the local shelter, and ...tug on your heart strings, bring out the box of tissues, and prepare for tears! Oh, and it's the math teacher to the rescue! Yes!!!
