Twelve-year-old Leonora, or Leo, is so impatient to figure out what her mother and sisters are doing in the family bakery to prepare for Halloween and Day of the Dead. They're not working. They're keeping secrets and it bugs her to no end.
She climbs into a bakery cabinet, sees a ritual she's clearly not mature enough for, and before you know it, has roped her two oldest sisters into showing her some of the family bruja bakery magic.
But one little spell leads to a bigger "love" spell, which goes horribly wrong for the poor boy involved and when she tries to fix that mistake...she shrinks her best friend's crush, a boy named Brent, down to 5-inches.
Leo wants to get out of this by using more magic, but cooler heads prevail and she appeals to her mom and sisters for help.
One tiny problem: she's not been initiated into the family bruja circle. So they can't undo her spells.
Leo's on her own to figure this out.
A great, gentle Halloween / Day of the Dead read that also features ghosts.
