This is a book 3 in the Cassidy Blake series. I read the other two books two Decembers ago as creepy "Holiday Picks" and this is just as good.
This time, Cass is in New Orleans, having just come from the catacombs of Paris. She's with her parents, paranormal investigators for their TV show. Jacob's now nearly corporeal, far more solid than he's ever been before, and it's a bit worrying.
Cass is finally dealing with the mysterious creature she saw on the Paris subway, hooded and cowled, who seemed to devour her when it revealed its empty, skull face.
She tries to stay out of the Veil, but with her parents visiting so many haunted houses and graveyards, she's drawn in and encounters the creature, again. Jacob, as a ghost, can't protect her, but Cass manages to break its hold and run.
The creature speaks to Cass in a séance telling her it's coming to get her, that she escaped death once, but won't again. She learns from her bestie Lara that it's an Emissary of the big bad Death himself, and once you're on his radar, there is no escape.
But there is a chance to fight to live another day. I won't spoil how it ends, or how Cass, Lara and Jacob team up again to defeat another undead foe amidst New Orleans ambience, but it's a great ending and I'm looking forward to the next!
