This month my reads were impacted by supply chain issues, so you'll notice some older books I pulled from the library shelves, but I did try to get in as many recently released books as my library could get in time to read and review. There's a lot for teachers this month!
I start the month with a non-fiction book recounting the story of the Port Chicago 50, which I highly recommend for both school and home bookshelves.
I continue with my Holiday Pick series of the excellent Eddie Red mysteries, Mystery in Mayan Mexico and Doom at Grant's Tomb. Loved the voice of the Black main character, super-recognizer and sleuth, Eddie! Along mystery lines, I also loved the historical mystery of The Parker Inheritance.
I've wanted to read the Seeds of America series for quite a while. It's older and set in the American Revolution, and excellent for hitting Social Studies standards! The author, Laurie Halse Anderson, offers excellent free teaching resources on her website. A Man Called Horse is the non-fiction account of a Black Seminole navigating racism on three fronts -- US, Mexican and Native -- to lead his people to safety and freedom.
Ophie's Ghosts was a great spine-tingling story, and Black Boy Joy is a compilation of short stories with something for every middle grade reader -- sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, you name it!
I loved the Legendary Alston Boys series. I had the perfect fabrics for two of the series' book photos. Playing the Cards You're Dealt struck a chord with me, although I learned Pinochle from my grandma.
And there are excellent teaching resources for picture books, Amanda Gorman's Change Sings and Kekla Magoon's The Highest Tribute, about Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
And finally Tristan Strong's last book was excellent, and he goes out punching, as we knew he would.
Enjoy!
And because I started doing these compilation graphics this month last year, here's my 2021 February Reads!
