The Jumbies, by Tracey Baptiste

Corinne and her father live on the edge of the forest. Most of the rest of the villagers on their tiny Caribbean island fear the forest for its jumbies, a type of spirit that looks almost human but isn't quite and is believed to trick and lure people to their deaths.

She's never been particularly scared of the jumbies, until one comes out and sets her sights on her widower father.

With a jumbie in her kitchen, controlling her father, she's helpless until she can learn more about her deceased mother's jumbie heritage. She must tap into her mother's magic in the seeds of an orange tree planted outside their house to defeat her mother's sister and restore balance to the jumbies and people living on the island.

This was an interesting, if super-short, middle grade fantasy. There are two other books in the series, as well.
