The beauty of a well-written and executed MG book is that it will continue to be read, long after its target readers age-out. My two teens revisit this series every so often, and it still produces tears in my high school freshwoman. She owned ratties as a little girl. For this and other reasons, Malcolm occupies a special place in our hearts. The books are well written, well plotted, and, consequently, read to smithereens.
