Amari Peter's back from defeating her arch nemesis, natural born magician and fellow budding teen, Dylan Van Helsing, the boy she unmasked in the first book, but it wouldn't make for an interesting story if she were allowed to bask in her successes, now would it?
She's famous with more than a million followers on her social media accounts for a while after proving not all magicians are bad magicians by defeating Dylan with weather magic and keeping him from getting the Black Book of spells. But then her whole world is turned upside down: time freezes everyone in the Supernatural World Congress, including elf king and Prime Minister Merlin.
Everyone assumes it's a massive spell, one only a foul magician could cast and maintain. It flames the supernatural world's fears of magicians.
Amari, friends Elsie and Jayden, once-bully now-partner Lara Van Helsing, and fellow magician and Dylan's older sister Maria, all suspect Dylan's behind the attack. He's escaped the Sightless Depths (where he was banished after the first book) and totally given himself over to foul magic. But the time freeze happens when he's supposedly still in captivity. So how's that possible? They what good agents do -- investigate.
In the meantime, the remaining bureaucrats at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs are let loose upon the supernatural world – a faun and Director of the Department of Half-truths, Elaine Hyacinth, who has a hidden power and agenda (I won't reveal), and acting-PM and wraith, Bane. Both possess a burning hatred of magicians – and Amari, by extension. No matter what she's done to prove otherwise. They want to block the investigation, no matter what.
First Amari's invitation to summer camp at the Bureau as a Junior Agent is rescinded. She's desperate to see her brother, Quentin, who's still non-responsive and in the Bureau's ICU. Her invitation is reinstated at Hyacinth's intervention. Just as Amari's finding her way around camp, however, the magicians' League spirits Amari away and offers her the magicians' Crown – which she's loathe to take, because it will set up a war between magicians and the magician-haters at Bureau (who call magicians UnWanteds). There has to be another way, a way that doesn't lead to the two sides killing each other.
There are multiple competing agendas working here and Amari and company have to see through the crowded field to figure out what's going on, how the time freeze was achieved and most importantly -- why.
All while competing in various challenges in the magicians' Great Game, pitting her magic against Dylan's, who is determined to win the Crown, drain Amari of all her magic and lead the magicians into war.
Enjoy!
